Sorry it’s been a while since my last update, I’ve had a bout of ‘Man Flu’ and have also been busy trying to get all my work wrapped up, ready for the holidays.
But now I’ve finished and have got some time off over Christmas, so I can crack on with my High Elf Lord. I’ve started work on the shield, just the wooden back and the gold at the moment, so not a huge update, but here is how it’s looking.
Metallics are one of the (many) things I really need to improve on, so this whole mini is going to be an excerise in Metallics.
As always all comments welcome.

yay updates!!!! that shiled’s wood is looking very nice keep it up:)
Indeedy – yay, updates!
I agree with Sam – the wood looks great. How do you achieve the effect – there seem lots of subtle graduations?

Andrew.
Hey Andrew,
I really like light wood on miniatures, so used this mix that I picked up a while back. Scorched brown/ khemri brown basecoat then washed it with badab black, I built this up in areas where there would be shadows like under the hand and around the shield handle etc. There is a woodgrain sculpted onto the back anyway which made the whole thing a lot easier, but it would be the same if the back was smooth and you wanted to add a woodgrain. I picked out the grain with khemri and then I went around and picked out certain areas with a mix of Khemri and Dheneb Stone.
I then dropped it and chipped it in two places, so had to back and redo a lot of it, but it repaired easily…. thank god!
Thanks for the ‘recipe’.
I’ve had a crack with shields before and haven’t been particularly happy with the results.
Wil – might be a bit of a hard question to answer, but … how do you go around working out the colour scheme for a new project?
I’m working from the point of being a competent painter who can copy really well (*cough* mostly copying your stuff – see Telion http://www.wargamerau.com/forum/index.php?s=&showtopic=98690&view=findpost&p=1379587), but I have trouble envisaging entirely new – something that will work together and not come out as eyeball-burningly horrible.
Experience would mostly count I suppose … do you have any other rituals/tests you go through to test things? Any tips?
Thanks heaps.
Cya,
Andrew.
Hey Andrew,

Love Telion, it’s always nice seeing my tutorial being put to good use
Good question about painting, I had written a nice answer but accidentally hit back on the browser without submitting it and have lost it all
It is a very good question that I hadn’t given much thought to until now, so I’ll think I will put it on here as a post, when I’ve rewritten it lol
W.
Nice scounts there andrew and i may have to use tellion for my fists, the only bad thing with your fists is there brown rims on bases lol bit odd i know but i allways do mine black. other then that awsomme.
@Wil – no worries – and thanks again for putting it up in the first place.
Last two examples of how I’ve put your tutorials to work are a squad of marines (scroll down to them – it was part of a painting challenge at the club – http://www.wargamerau.com/forum/index.php?s=&showtopic=84598&view=findpost&p=1230887) and a predator (which I’ve since fixed up a couple of missed off widgets – http://www.wargamerau.com/forum/index.php?s=&showtopic=90007&view=findpost&p=1292303).
Lots of fun!
@Sam – Hey thanks!
I do my bases brown as the ‘theme’ for the army is a green, agrarian world, so brown works better. Love the idea of marines facing off over an idyllic farming community … and trashing it.
Cya,
Andrew.
Cool i went onto your links and the tank and the squad next to it are very nice, im going into gw tommorow to work on my yellow but that tank is sweet
Thanks Sam – I was proud of it.
Even better, a local store manager went through it with me to go through all the things which need to be improved which was instructive.
Hello quick question to you both could you tell me what colours i should paint my fists if they are in the 1st company? Going in gw tommorow to ask but wanna make sure, also if we could have an update on your skaven wil that would be awsome cheers guys
Hi Sam – 1st company is red-trim. I Ike fifth as I prefer black.
Cya
Andrew.
cheers yh i was thinking black as it would be a bit easier than red, i made do 5th after i do 1st or maybe just 5th hmmm
Cheers andrew
Tride red on a test model and it looks odd so im gunna do what i usally do and copy other people so 5th company it is lol, but now since the new b angels are on advance order im thinking i should finish them first hmmmmm
This is so not the place to post Imperial Fist photos (Wil: hint, hint
), but …
Imperial Fist Ironclad Dreadnought finished! http://www.wargamerau.com/forum/index.php?s=&showtopic=104720&view=findpost&p=1545793
Now … onward to Sigvald, mounted on a (Wiltrichs-tutorial) scenic base as part of our club’s next painting challenge! (Not so keen on the rules of this challenge – we’re given D6-colours to paint something – ie. limited palette, with a random number of colours.)
Consider the hint taken Andrew! lol
Ironclad looks superb mate! Keep up the good work
W.
Brilliant dread andrew, yellow looks really good.
Thanks guys!
